More Accounting Jobs Become Available As Pay Rises

5/5/2011

United Kingdom

Commercial businesses released more jobs for accountants throughout quarter one, according to the latest Accountancy Market Update from recruitment specialists Robert Walters.

Corporate finance specialists, business analysts and second-time movers with two to three years' post-qualified experience were particularly sought-after as companies sought to fill gaps created by previous streamlining. Internal auditors were also recruited in increasing volumes as businesses looked to recruit professionals capable of driving business growth.

Meanwhile, intense competition for the best talent drove pay for some accountants upwards. Newly-qualified professionals moving into new jobs were receiving salaries of up to £50k (compared to £45k in 2010), while contract rates rose by approximately five to ten per cent.

Toby Fowlston, Director of Commercial and Professional Services at Robert Walters, says:
"Vacancy levels among commercial businesses were higher than for the corresponding period in 2010. In particular, SMEs hired noticeably more accountants than they had done previously. This is in direct comparison to the banking sector, which has recruited in lower volumes so far this year.

"Commercial businesses generally are also more positive in the types of people they are hiring - we are now seeing more demand for finance professionals who can drive the company forward, generate revenue and have a positive impact on the business. A good example of this is more consumer and industrial businesses now hiring internal auditors as they look to implement expansion-based strategies.

"Employers generally have been more inquisitive about the salaries and contract rates offered by competitors than they were last year. The increases we have seen to pay have been interesting and show that businesses are willing to be flexible to secure the very best people."
