The best sales people have quality traits that can help a procurement professional become a great procurement professional.

Be a good listener

Good listening is one of those easily forgotten behaviours, usually regarded as being easy but to actually truly pay attention is something that takes consideration. Give it a try, and you will be surprised by how much your customer, suppliers and colleagues want to share with you. Always come prepared with just a few well thought out questions based on who you’re speaking to.

Tenacity and perseverance

Sales people are rejected more often than they are successful. However they continue to try and learn from their mistakes, never losing confidence. Supply chain and procurement professionals can learn that with perseverance comes eventual success.

Relationship building skills

The ability to establish rapport with their customers, and the consistent creation of an atmosphere of trust in all their sales relationships is vital to being a good salesperson. Supply chain and procurement professionals are also in the unique position of having to communicate with many people across the business, so good interpersonal and relationship building skills are a must.

Teamwork

Your organisation is filled with people who can help you and share knowledge. Tap into all the resources you can. The best salespeople are those that know how to use what resources are available to them. Utilise management, collaborate with fellow team members and don't be afraid to ask for help if you feel you are struggling with any aspect of your role.
