What you need to know about working in the Netherlands

Many young professionals from all over the world want to work in the Netherlands for various reasons. Fortunately, there are plenty of jobs in the Netherlands at the moment, which means that the market is very candidate-driven. However, it is important to enter the Dutch labour market fully prepared to get the most out of your career. We have summarised the most important tips and tricks for you about working in the Netherlands.

Optimise your cv and motivation letter

If you want to find a job in the Netherlands, the first step is to apply for a role. Keep your cv and your motivation letter short and simple. Most Dutch employers are only interested in personal information that is related to the job and their company. Therefore, keep the layout clean and make sure that you only provide relevant information. Moreover, digital skills and knowledge about different systems are becoming more important in the Netherlands. If you do master these skills, we recommend you to highlight them during your application.

Arrange the practical issues on time 

When you are hired for a job in the Netherlands, you will need to arrange practical things like accommodation, insurances and a bank account. Fortunately, you can arrange these things quite easily. For example, you can request a Dutch social security number online and receive one within 48 hours. Finding a place to live is a bit more challenging, but there are many rental websites that you can check out, such as Funda. Do not worry if you have a temporary contract with your Dutch employer. Even without a permanent contract you are entitled to rent a house, flat or apartment. 

Connect with other expats if you want to 

The Netherlands has many expat communities with the aim of connecting international candidates with each other. Not only large international corporates have these communities, but non-profit organisations and other institutions also host events and other activities for internationals working in the Netherlands. This is a great way to meet new people and build a network in the Netherlands.

Keep the working environment in mind 

The working environment in the Netherlands is quite informal and relaxed. Everyone works hard, despite their position within a company. Moreover, it is good to keep in mind that Dutch people are very punctual: they like to make appointments and are always on time. This relates to how Dutch people communicate in general: direct and to the point. Do not be discouraged by blunt remarks or direct feedback, and do not take it too personally. Another typical Dutch trait is that many people want to keep their work and private lives as separate as possible. The hybrid working culture is thriving in the Netherlands and working part time is not an exception at all. As an expat, you can use this to your advantage: the excellent work-life balance means that you have more than enough time to explore the Netherlands when you are not working.
