Department / Team
The Senior Risk Analyst plays an important role in safeguarding and enhancing the performance of the trading, refining, and fuel supply business. Acting as a key link between risk management and commercial teams, the role focuses on analysing complex trading positions, interpreting market movements, and ensuring that financial performance is accurately captured and understood.
The position goes beyond pure reporting, requiring the provision of insight, the ability to challenge assumptions, and an active contribution to improved decision-making. The Senior Risk Analyst works closely with traders, finance, and senior management, gaining a comprehensive view of the value chain from crude sourcing and refinery optimisation to logistics, biofuel blending, and customer sales. This exposure enables a deep understanding of how market fundamentals, operational realities, and trading strategies interact.
The role also contributes substantially to improving systems, processes, and reporting capabilities. This includes developing new analytical tools, enhancing ETRM functionality, and identifying workflow efficiencies. The position is highly visible, involving regular interaction with senior stakeholders within Risk, and offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact in a fast-paced and evolving energy environment.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Analyse trading books to assess exposure to market price movements;
• Reconcile and attribute daily mark-to-market P&L movements to maintain control over financial reporting;
• Collaborate with traders to investigate unexpected P&L outcomes and resolve discrepancies;
• Summarise and explain P&L movements over time, linking performance to positions and market developments;
• Monitor exposures against limits and Delegations of Authority;
• Develop new reports and analytical tools to generate business insights;
• Support improvements to ETRM systems, including testing new releases;
• Manage cost attributions, transfer pricing, and internal charges to ensure transparency of performance;
• Support and challenge commercial stakeholders to promote sound risk-reward decision-making;
• Identify improvement opportunities and implement more efficient processes and ways of working;
• Work closely with business control, performance reporting, and accounting to ensure accurate P&L reporting.
Knowledge and experience
• Minimum of five years’ experience in a similar risk or product control role within commodities, oil, or energy sectors;
• Solid understanding of accounting and financial reporting for physical commodities;
• Basic knowledge of risk metrics such as VaR and drawdown;
• Familiarity with derivatives including futures, swaps, and simple options;
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills;
• Knowledge of commodities markets, pricing, and physical trading, including FX exposure and hedging;
• Strong analytical and structured capabilities, with attention to detail;
• Curious mindset, with willingness to ask questions and challenge assumptions;
• Reliable, accurate, and well-organised;
• Proactive and motivated team player;
• Fluency in English with strong communication skills.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
• Degree in mathematics, science, engineering, business, economics, or a data-related field;
• Understanding of biofuels markets, products, and tickets;
• ETRM knowledge, particularly Allegro/Horizon;
• Ability to use SQL, Python, and PowerBI for producing risk reports.
